Work

History

Since October 2007 I work for Google Australia as a Site Reliability Engineer. There's not much that I can publicly say about my work there, except that it's very interesting and that we are hiring.

From June 2004 until October 2007 I was a researcher in the Embedded, Real-Time and Operating Systems program (ERTOS), as well as a conjoint lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. At UNSW I teached Distributed Systems (COMP9243) in session 1, 2007, together with my colleague Ihor Kuz (and I still have regular guest appearances).

From November 2003 to May 2004 I was a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the laboratory for computer systems at ETH Zürich. Before that, I was a member of the Parallel and Distributed Systems Research Group led by Prof. Thomas M. Stricker, also at ETH Zürich (my former page there).

Interests and Projects

My research interests include practical aspects of parallel and distributed systems, operating systems, and distributed storage systems. Most of my research work in this area was during my time at ETH Zürich and is described in the "Work and Projects" section of my old homepage there. My research there was about systems for data replication, storage, distribution and gathering of large amounts of data, as well as parallel and distributed filesystems, using high-speed networks (at the time) in clusters of PCs.

During my time with ERTOS, I was also involved in the Goanna project, which was is about reducing the number of software deficiencies in system software and embedded systems by static analysis of the systems' source code.

Societies and Professional Activities

I was a member of the technical programm committees of 2016 International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP-2016), IEEE Cluster 2014, NPC 2007, 2006 International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP-06), Cluster 2005, and the Local Computer Networks (LCN) 2005 conferences.

Furthermore, I was a reviewer for numerous other conferences, such as: IEEE International Conference on Cluster Computing, ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGrid), ACM/IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS), International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC), USENIX Annual Technical Conference, Symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP), EuroSys, and others.

I was assessor for two PhD theses: Performing under Overload, by Luke Macpherson, and Eidolon: Adapting Distributed Applications to Their Environment, by Daniel Potts.

For many years, I was a member of IEEE Computer Society, SIGOPS and USENIX.

List of Five Selected Research Publications

For a full list of all my publications, including my dissertation, please visit my publications page.

Other publications of the ERTOS research group are listed on the ERTOS publications page. Older publications from the CoPs project on Clusters of PCs (back at ETH Zürich) can be found on the CoPs publications page. There is also a special page on my Dissertation on the Distribution and Storage of Data on Local and Remote Disks in Multi-Use Clusters of PCs.

Note on change of my surname

With my marriage in February 2004, I officially changed my surname from "Rauch" to "Rauch Valenti". For reasons of consistency, I still use the name "Felix Rauch" for my publications.
